Product & Engineering Leader

Dynamic Engineering Manager with a builder's mindset — skilled in leading teams, bridging technical depth with product strategy, and delivering scalable solutions that drive business growth. Experienced in cross-departmental collaboration, SolidWorks, data analysis, and automation.

Engineer. Builder. Leader.

I'm an engineer who thinks like a product manager. My career has been defined by connecting technical capabilities to real business outcomes — whether optimizing manufacturing workflows, building data tools, or leading teams through complex, high-stakes deliverables.

I take a customer-centric approach to everything I do, believing that the best technical solutions are the ones that solve real problems for real people. I'm comfortable working directly with customers — whether that's jumping on a call, sitting down face-to-face, or traveling on-site to diagnose and work through problems together. I prioritize clear communication and decisive problem-solving to keep teams aligned and customers satisfied.

The Right Fit.

I'm seeking Engineering Manager, Product Manager, or Project Manager roles in the Columbia, SC area, remote or hybrid roles. Culture is everything to me. I want to be part of a team where people know each other's names, leadership has an open door, and the work actually means something.

Company size is secondary. What I'm really after is a place where I can learn how things work, bring my experience to the table, and help improve both the processes and the products. I'm energized by new industries, new markets, and new problems — and I have a track record of walking into complex situations and making them better.

If that sounds like your team, I'd love to talk.

Experience

March 2024 – February 2026

New Product Development Supervisor

SafeRack, LLC · Sumter / Andrews / Greenville, SC
  • Inherited a department in disarray with two stalled, misaligned projects and a team lacking the structure needed to ship.
  • Made the decisive call to shelve an over-scoped $500K–$600K product that lacked broad market viability — wrapped it cleanly and moved on rather than letting it drain resources indefinitely.
  • Took over a gate revision that had been stalling for over two years under previous leadership — cut through the indecision, unified the team around a single direction, and drove it across the finish line. That gate is SafeRack's highest-volume product and a multi-million dollar revenue driver.
  • Oversaw 3 successful product launches: a gate revision, a non-penetrative rooftop access system, and a new modular gangway projected to generate $20M+ annually.
  • The modular gangway solved field reliability issues that had plagued its predecessor and was designed from the ground up to reduce production lead times and simplify installation for the customer.
  • Presented the modular gangway at SafeRack's global sales meeting to 40+ worldwide sales professionals — received so enthusiastically that applause interrupted the feature announcements.
  • Built and managed a geographically distributed NPD team across three SC locations — navigating turnover, promoting a high-potential internal candidate, and making two new hires.
  • Maintained a pipeline spanning 3 launched products, 3 in progress, and 4 in early scoping simultaneously.
  • Gathered direct customer input through plant fly-in visits and on-site conversations, using that feedback to shape design decisions.
  • Presented regular updates to the executive team, aligning NPD priorities with company strategy and interfacing with everyone from shop floor to CEO to keep projects moving.
September 2017 – March 2024

Product Engineer

SafeRack, LLC · Sumter, SC
  • Led a 4-month initiative consolidating 100+ custom pneumatic power system configurations into 8 standardized packages, dramatically reducing lead times and enabling stocked inventory for faster delivery.
  • Played a key role launching SafeRack into the marine gangway market, helping grow it from limited scope projects to a $3M revenue segment.
  • Co-designed two flagship gangway styles — an articulating stair version with powered movement in all directions up to 30', and a flat ramp version developed by reverse-engineering and improving on a competitor's design.
  • Served as SolidWorks CAD Admin and de facto IT liaison — took over a company-wide PDM implementation mid-project after the original lead departed, resolving deep infrastructure issues by working directly with SolidWorks support.
  • Managed 25 CAD users and 50+ floating licenses across Engineering, Sales, Manufacturing, Customer Service, and Business Development.
  • Built and ran SafeRack's engineering onboarding program — assessing SolidWorks skills during hiring and training all incoming engineers and drafters on product knowledge, engineering standards, and OSHA requirements.
  • Acted as second-in-command for the drafting department — ran meetings, managed scheduling, and assumed the drafting manager's responsibilities when needed.
  • Spent 4 weeks traveling the country troubleshooting, redesigning, and physically repairing gangway systems at customer sites — working at height on large industrial equipment where precision and safety were non-negotiable.
October 2015 – September 2017

Structural Mechanical Designer

SafeRack, LLC · Sumter, SC
  • Joined SafeRack directly out of UofSC as the first participant in a pilot engineering program designed by the Director of Engineering — a structured path to immerse new graduates in the full product offering before transitioning them to full engineering responsibility.
  • The program was so successful it became the standard onboarding path for every new engineering hire and eventually laid the groundwork for a formal internship program.
  • Managed 4–6 concurrent custom projects creating SolidWorks models and customer-facing drawings for industrial safety equipment based on individual project scope and requirements.
  • Worked closely with the Sales team daily — reviewing scopes of work, determining feasibility, pushing back where needed, and equipping Sales with the language and information to align customers on the right solution.

Selected to represent SafeRack at a week-long Lean/Kaizen event bringing together representatives from each portfolio company. Worked directly alongside local manufacturing employees to identify and implement process improvements, then presented findings to the host company's CEO, COO, and senior MiddleGround Capital leadership — entirely in an international setting without a shared language.

Don't Take My Word For It.

"Thomas has a rare ability to walk into a complicated situation, cut through the noise, and get things moving. I watched him take projects that had been stalled for years and drive them across the finish line through sheer focus and good judgment. He's the kind of engineer who makes everyone around him better."

"Working with Thomas over the years has been genuinely different from working with most engineers. He comes prepared, he understands the business side of what we're doing together, and he treats the partnership like it matters — because to him, it does. I'd work with him again without hesitation."

"Thomas was the kind of manager you actually wanted to work for. He gave you real responsibility, backed you up when it mattered, and always made time to help you figure things out — without doing it for you. I learned more about how to do my job well under his leadership than at any other point in my career."

"Thomas doesn't just understand the engineering — he understands the whole picture. He pushed us to think through problems we didn't even know we had yet, and the products we shipped together were better for it. Smart, collaborative, and genuinely invested in getting it right."
